From General Manager Rachel Vidito, to our professional concierge team, we'll make sure you experience all the must-sees and must-tastes of our capital city. The Great George, originally named The Regent Hotel, was first built in 1846 by James H. Downe. A few years later when merchant Henry Haszard bought the building, he turned it into the London House; selling everything from parasols, corsets, boas, tea caddies, nails, to groceries. In 1857, Mr. Haszard remodeled the property back into a fashionable hotel. At the height of its popularity, the Pavilion Hotel even had the distinction of hosting some of the delegates from the 1864 Charlottetown Conference on Union, where Prince Edward Island became known as the Birthplace of Confederation. More than 120 years later, the current restoration began in 1990 as the brainchild of Mike Cassidy and current owner, Kevin Murphy. They also started re-envisioning this entire section of downtown Charlottetown, taking over adjacent heritage buildings to become part of a grandeur hotel. Their carefully planned restoration program was not without its challenges, however. With the age and conditions of the buildings, the painstaking efforts to retain the original exteriors of these historic landmarks alone is nothing short but remarkable. The objective to maintain the historical quality while renovating to a modern standard has since become known as one of Prince Edward Island's largest private heritage development projects. In 1996, renovations were completed and The Inns on Great George, as we were formally known, was officially opened. In 2000, Kevin's brother Michael Murphy and his partner Paul Smith joined the team, and became the official innkeepers of the prestigious four-and-a-half star accommodation. In July of 2009, Michael and Paul sold their shares in The Great George to Kevin and Kathy to pursue other interests. Since then, Hoteliers, Restauranteurs, and Heritage Tourism Developers Kevin and Kathy Murphy have been proudly serving and hosting visitors from around the world. |
